Not all Hope Online students attend Learning Centers because they live in dangerous
communities surrounded by bad influences. For some, the problem involves
learning disabilities, or difficulties functioning well in large school
classrooms.
Such is the case with the Hope Online students of Tetra Academy’s Learning Center.
Tetra Academy is located in Lakewood and specializes in serving students with
learning disabilities. When Hope Online approached its Director, Carmen Senter,
with the idea of opening a Learning Center, she saw an opportunity to serve the
students in her community, not only students with special needs.
Upon enrolling in Hope Online, most of the students are two to three grade levels
behind in math, language arts or both. “We had one student who, after 8th grade, had no
place to go,” Ms. Senter says, “he was refusing to do anything. In his first
year here, he completed two years of high school science in addition to his
other studies. Now, in his third year, he continues to do well, and graduated
with Hope Online’s Class of 2008 and enrolled in college.”
Ms. Senter sees most of “her kids” as college bound. She has a student who came to
Hope Online as a 20‐year‐old senior with behavior problems. He could have
graduated from his previous school if he took a gym class and one other
elective; but, he couldn’t read, and he said no one would listen to him. He
graduated with Hope Online’s Class of 2007.
Parents love Hope Online at Tetra Academy. They found a school able to help their
children succeed. Some parents drive their children every day from as far away
as Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Aurora, Evergreen, and Broomfield.
Ms. Senter states, “I look at my students, knowing most of
them had no other choice, and I can see that now they’re learning.” Ms. Senter
believes, “All students should be honored. I emphasize to them that they are
making a choice of a lifetime. Their continued education will lead them to
their individual successes.”
